Today's Interview: Kentucky's New Poet Laureate

In Today’s Interview, arts reporter, Cheri Lawson talks with Crystal Wilkinson. Wilkinson has been appointed Kentucky’s 2021-22 Poet Laureate by Gov. Andy Beshear. 

Wilkinson is an  Associate Professor of English in Creative Writing at the University of Kentucky. She has received numerous awards and is the author of three books including: Blackberries, Blackberries, Water Street, and The Birds of Opulence. Her next book, Perfect Black, is scheduled to be released in August. 

As part of the Kentucky Writers’ Day Celebration, Wilkinson is expected to be inducted at a virtual ceremony on April 23rd at 10 a.m. on the Kentucky Arts Council’s Facebook page.

Cheri is a broadcast producer, anchor, reporter, announcer and talk show host with over 25 years of experience. For three years, she was the local host of Morning Edition on WMUB-FM at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Cheri produced and hosted local talk shows and news stories for the station for nine years. Prior to that, she produced and co-hosted a local talk show on WVXU, Cincinnati for nearly 15 years. Cheri has won numerous awards from the Public Radio News Directors Association, the Ohio and Kentucky Associated Press, and both the Cincinnati and Ohio chapters of the Society for Professional Journalists.
