King's Daughters Health System in Ashland becomes part of the University of Kentucky

Provided by UK HealthCare

King’s Daughters Health System in Ashland is now a part of the University of Kentucky. The two health care systems have been working in a joint venture for the last two years during the pandemic. Last week King’s Daughters officially joined UK.

Mark Birdwhistell is Vice President for Health System Administration at UK HealthCare. He said King’s daughters is an incredible health system.

“Including two hospitals, a long-term care facility, an ambulance service and a huge network of primary care providers and other specialties. We want to make sure that the voice of the local community is preserved in the management of that facility,” said Birdwhistell.

The VP for Health System Administration said the governing board will be comprised of university officials as well as representatives of the Ashland community.

Birdwhistell said they hope to take positives from UK and implement them at King’s Daughters.

“Many of our physicians will hope to be rotating there as needed. We also are looking at increasing their education opportunities for physicians and other healthcare professionals. So, that’s UK’s sweet spot,” said Birdwhistell.

Birdwhistell explained the location in Ashland will allow UK HealthCare to bring more Kentuckians specialty services.
