Approximately 75,000 Kentuckians age 65 or older are living with Alzhiemer’s disease. The University of Kentucky’s Sanders Brown Center on Aging, over four decades, has built an international reputation in areas of dementia research and patient care. Work is now underway on a new memory clinic.
Long time Sanders-Brown Neurologist Greg Jicha says the new facility at the former Turfland Mall site will be able to accommodate more dementia patients. He said currently it can, in some cases, take a year before patients can be seen. “It is not uncommon that I may show up in clinic and actually have a no show and when I look in the system find that the patient has actually passed away during the time that they made the appointment and actually showed up. We can’t have this,” said Jicha.
Services at the new memory clinic will include medication management, addressing sleep disturbances, gait analysis, and new telemedicine space. Dr. Jicha says the new clinic is scheduled to open this fall.
