UK Cardiologist: Heart Disease Worsening In Kentucky Women

ukhealthcare.uky.edu

A University of Kentucky cardiologist says many women across the Commonwealth are not fully aware of heart disease risks.  Friday is National Wear Red Day, a time to recognize the health issue.

UK Gill Heart and Vascular Institute’s Dr. Gretchen Wells said more women die of heart disease than all cancers combined. “When I tell people that, they are rather shocked because most people are so up to date about their cancer screenings and particularly women.  They have their mammograms annually.  They have their pap smears at recommended intervals and so on, but the cardiovascular risk is something that just falls off their radar,” said Wells.

Wells noted obesity, smoking, and type two diabetes are factors.   The UK cardiologist added the prevalence of heart disease can be turned around with education, screenings, and appropriate lifestyle changes.

In addition to diet adjustments, Wells said 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like a brisk walk, five out of seven days can reduce the risk of heart attack by 50%.  The cardiologist said know your numbers, cholesterol and blood pressure, and take ownership of them.
