Fayette Health Commissioner Says Lexington Likely To Stay Between Orange And Red Coronavirus Levels

Stu Johnson

Fayette County Health Department Commissioner Kraig Humbaugh says there has been a delay in entering information into the state’s electronic coronavirus case counting system.

Humbaugh noted work continues with state health department partners to get caught up. “The reason for that is we prioritize case identification, case investigation.  We need to work with them to get more consistency.  We’ll probably never perfectly match our numbers, but we are striving for more consistency in the numbers,” said Humbaugh.

Regardless of the reporting methods, the health department commissioner said COVID-19 rates in the Lexington area remain high.

Humbaugh said the Lexington area continues to fluctuate between orange and red when it comes to coronavirus activity.  Red is used to designate the highest level of COVID-19 spread in that measurement tool.  Humbaugh added the central Kentucky community has been seeing rates above 20 cases per 100,000 people.  “We will probably go because we’ve been right on that borderline, we will fluctuate between because 25 is the cutoff between the orange and the red.  I think we’ll continue to fluctuate there unless we see a change in our numbers or in our case counts that are coming in every day,” explained Humbaugh.

Humbaugh said he doesn’t have a crystal ball to predict if coronavirus activity will remain where it is over the next few weeks.  He said it’s important to follow health guidance and wear masks in public, stay six feet apart, and wash hands well.?
