State Police To Focus On Aggressive Drivers

kentuckystatepolice.org

Even with coronavirus active in Kentucky, highways across the bluegrass state are likely to be busy with holiday travelers this weekend.  Kentucky State Police say an effort is being made to target aggressive drivers.

The KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division launched this week the statewide effort focusing on aggressive driving behaviors.  Sergeant Jason Morris said both passenger cars and trucks are included in the safety campaign.  Morris said rapidly increasing speed passing a truck is not suggested. “A lot of folks, they do get nervous around them.  But, what I ask is don’t accelerate to get by that truck because what you’re going to do is put yourself right against another truck,” said Morris.

The KSP trooper said excessive speed, improper lane changing, and cutting off trucks are all examples of aggressive driving.   Morris noted it seems ‘running late’ is a common occurrence today.  “A lot of times individuals procrastinate, think Ah, it’s just a few minutes and then they don’t allow for traffic.  They don’t allow for other collisions, road work.  Things that may be going on in their area.  And then it puts them behind and then, in turn, now we get that aggressive driving situation,” noted Morris.

In 2019, there were more than 61 hundred crashes involving commercial trucks on Kentucky roadways resulting in 88 deaths.
