Lexington has seen its largest one day count for coronavirus with Friday’s report of 100 additional cases. Although there’s been some fluctuation, Fayette Health Department Commissioner Kraig Humbaugh says the central Kentucky community has experienced a steady increase in cases since mid-May.
Humbaugh noted the average case age is trending younger, with many in the 18 to 34 year old category. “You know we are seeing that more cases are having increased physical interaction in the public sphere. We’re seeing workplace exposures. And then there are, of course, folks being exposed while traveling,” said Humbaugh.
Humbaugh said residents in Lexington can make a difference in changing the trajectory of the disease. He added, quote, “it’s going to take people taking this seriously.” The health commissioner worries additional spread of COVID-19 will spread to vulnerable people.
Humbaugh said the curve of increasing cases can be flattened by wearing masks in public, washing hands well, social distancing, and staying home when sick.
