COVID-19 Testing Offered To Lexington Hispanic Community

Stu Johnson

Responding to a disproportionate increase in positive coronavirus cases in Lexington’s Hispanic community, free drive-up and walk-up testing will be offered the next few days.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton announced Tuesday the first stop in the Mobile Neighborhood Testing Program is the Cardinal Valley community. “Some people continue to infect others because they don’t know they have the virus.  And the more people who get tested, the better we know what we have to do to slow the increase,” said Gorton.

Fayette County Health Commissioner Kraig Humbaugh said Hispanic and African American residents comprise half of all cumulative cases in Lexington.    Danna Aguilar works at Cardinal Valley Elementary School.  She believes area residents will respond to the opportunity.  “Once they see that we’re here for them and we’re here to support them they will come out and get it done.  I always think that it’s information not getting to them in their language, so now that we’re doing this together they will be able to understand what’s happening and get it done,” Aguilar explained.

The testing will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at Cardinal Valley Elementary and again there Friday from two to eight p.m.  Saturday the COVID-19 testing moves to the Cardinal Valley Park shelter from 9 a.m. until three o clock.  Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says the mobile testing will also be used in other areas.?
