Reported coronavirus cases in Kentucky spiked this week. Governor Beshear reported 625 new cases Tuesday with more than 300 of them coming from testing at Muhlenberg County’s Green River Correctional Complex. Beshear also announced 14 new deaths.
During his nightly briefing, the governor was asked what his internal modeling shows about COVID 19 cases when business activity resumes. Beshear said if deaths are seen related to work, a pause and re-evaluation would occur. “All of this is people doing the best we can, trying to make the best decision we can and balancing the best rules and restrictions with what people are willing to do and trying to get the maximum compliance out of Kentuckians. They’ve done an amazing job, but we do need to get some people back to work and I’m just trying to do it as safely as I can,” said Beshear.
As more Kentucky businesses reopen following an extended coronavirus closure, Governor Beshear noted he and his team addressing coronavirus will keep a close eye on infection trends.
Governor Beshear said his team is also looking at ways to safely reopen the state’s child care centers in June. ?
Beshear says it’s a health and economic issue. “And if we’re going to rebuild our economy, having that capacity still in place, having those professionals ready to come back to work is also really important. You are really important. And we’re going to work as hard as we can to find the best solution to get child care rolling as soon as we can,” explained Beshear.
Asked about the possibility of Kentuckians taking summer vacations, Beshear said he hopes residents choose to travel within Kentucky’s borders. The governor said hopefully state parks will be more fully open at some point this summer.
