Lexington Firefighters Install Hundreds Of Smoke Detectors

Stu Johnson

The Lexington fire department is expanding its neighborhood smoke detector canvassing, thanks to grant funding.  About two dozen firefighters Saturday knocked on close to a thousand doors and installed several hundred smoke detectors in the downtown area.

Fire Lieutenant Jessica Bowman says a single mother called her recently to say smoke detectors installed last January proved critically important early one morning. “She went into the kitchen and found where a small fire had started burning in the kitchen.  We know that small fires can turn into big fires very quickly and the early warning that the smoke alarms provided her, and enabled her to actually put the fire out herself and her family was safe that night.”

Bowman says $50,000, through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, will allow local firefighters to conduct three more smoke detector neighborhood canvassing events during 2019.
