For the first time, firefighters in Lexington worked this past weekend focused on a specific neighborhood to place smoke alarms in homes.
Some 40 firefighters and volunteers entered 188 homes in Cardinal Valley Saturday and installed 762 alarms.
Fire Lieutenant Jessica Bowman says, on average, four smoke detector units were placed in bedrooms and on different floors in each house.
“We know that that’s a neighborhood full of older homes that were built prior to hard-wired smoke alarms being built into them, so we knew the homes predated that and we knew we hadn’t receive very many calls from them,” said Bowman.
Bowman says the requests for free smoke alarms through the fire department have been high enough to deplete resources.
She says there should be enough smoke alarms through Red Cross and individual donations to last through the end of the year.
