Ongoing woodland fires across Kentucky are prompting Governor Bevin to declare a statewide emergency. It means local officials can request state resources in their firefighting efforts.
State forestry officials report more than three dozen wildland fires have burned 3800 acres so far.
In Harlan County alone, residents there have seen five fires. Kentucky Emergency Management Spokesman Buddy Rogers says water drops are a part of the response, “The National Guard has air assets helping with missions over there, dumping water on some of these impacted areas the fires are burning.”
With few prospects of significant rainfall, Rogers admits the National Guard response could be ongoing. He urges citizens in or near wooded areas to pass on any intentional burning right now.?
