Lexington's Humane Society has a new option for caring for pets during disasters or other emergencies. The federal chemical stockpile program has provided funding to the agency for two trailers.
Emergency Management Director Pat Dugger says one trailer with clear plexiglass sides can hold up to 40 animals. "If they need to go to a neighborhood, if they need to use it at a stockpile event, maybe at the reception location where people are brining animals with them from Madison County. So, the nice thing is it can be used wherever it's needed. It will be on wheels," said Dugger.
Dugger says the Humane Society also received a utility trailer for such things as generators, tents, grates, and pet care items. Both dogs and cats can be accommodated in the new trailer. "The grates within the trailer are separated, so they could make one side of it cats, the other dogs, or two cats. So, they have the flexibility to break it up into how ever they need it to do," added Dugger.
The 45-thousand-dollar cost of the pet mobile housing program is being covered by funds from the federal chemical stockpile program. ?
