Lots of fireworks will likely be going off the next few days in central Kentucky neighborhoods. In Lexington, there will likely be a mix of legal and illegal works.
More than a year ago, the state passed legislation to legalize flying and exploding fireworks. Still, some individual communities, like Lexington opted to continue a ban on those types of pyrotechnics. Most all of the counties surrounding Fayette do allow the sale of fireworks that go airborne or blow up.
Lexington firefighter Kyle Branham says local residents can feel confident in what's sold in town. "If they're sold here in Fayette County, they're legal to be used here, if they're purchased here in Fayette County at a stand. We've been out and looked at those and there's conforming," said Branham.
Fire Major Mike Farmer says citizens can voice their concerns about potential illegal fireworks by calling LexCall at 3-1-1. "If someone calls and makes a complaint through 3-1-1, they'll get cued, and at that point, when an officer becomes available for that call, they will go. By the time the officer gets there, the show may be over. It's entirely possible. So, there may not be many citations, if any, written this year," said Farmer.
Lexington fire officials say there are at least seven professional fireworks displays planned between Thursday and Saturday night. They says that's the best way to see the best fireworks in the safest environment.?
