The Associated Press is reporting one flooding-related death today in Greenup County. The AP said crews were working to rescue another person.
Jackson National Weather Service Meteorologist Jane Marie Wix said the lack of plant life this time of year makes flooding more likely.
“The problem is this time of year there’s not a lot of foliage, there’s not a lot of grass and greenery along the ground to soak that up and so it’s not uncommon that if we do get heavy rains in December or anytime during the winter, it is more prone to flooding,” said Wix.
Wix says widespread flash flooding was reported in a number of counties. She said a roaring waterway can be mesmerizing but also very dangerous. “The problem with watching the rivers like that is they are really cool to watch. It is impressive, just make sure you’re far enough away and you have an escape route because rivers can rise very quick. Even if it’s not raining where you are it could have been raining upstream,” added Wix.
Wix says there were several reporting stations with rainfall amounts well over two inches in a 24 hour period. She said most major waterways were expected to crest Tuesday.
