Lexington’s recycling efforts are facing some challenges. The downtown recycling center is shut down due to a mechanical problem with a machine which sorts aluminum cans.
City officials suspended paper recycling in mid-May because regional mills were overrun with material. Angela Poe with Lexington’s Environmental Quality and Public Works Department said the city remains committed to door -to-door recycling.
“We want to make sure that people know that the recycling center is here to stay and that the city is really committed to recycling. There are over a million dollars, I think close to a million and a half dollars of investments that a planned for this summer and upcoming fiscal year,” said Poe.
Poe said that includes safety equipment, a new conveyor belt, and an optical sorter for plastics. She said installation will require the recycling center to be shut down for about two weeks. A time for making those improvements is not yet scheduled. In the short term, the Lexington recycling center is expected to resume operations on Monday.
