A central Kentucky environmental non-profit is hosting a composting forum Wednesday night in downtown Lexington. It was a natural follow-up to a successful recycling program in October.
Bluegrass Greensource Director Amy Sohner says the recycling event earlier this fall included a lot of composting questions. She says those focused on backyard and larger scale operations to break down certain forms of waste. “We can recycle all we can. We can reduce what we use as much as we can, but there’s still the food waste and the organics we have in our backyard, the lawn clippings, the tree limbs, and all of that. And people want to really understand how they can reduce that from going into the landfill,” said Sohner.
Sohner says the forum is scheduled from six to eight o clock at the Central Library. Sohner says one speaker, Franklin County Solid Waste Administrator Blair Hecker, has developed a large animal composting program. “She has devised a program where, instead of landfilling them and taking up that precious space, she’s instead composting them at her facility in Franklin County. Her staff go and pick up animals from different farmers in Franklin County, bring them to her facility, and within a few months, turn into that rich soil,” noted Sohner.
The Bluegrass Greensource director says about 30% of the waste stream comes from compostable material.
