Central Kentucky Water Utility Changing Disinfection Process

Water treatment for many customers in portions of 13 Kentucky counties is about to change.  Kentucky American Water Company serves some 130,000 customers in central Kentucky.

Company Vice President Kevin Rogers says a project at two of the three treatment plants is changing the disinfection process.  He says the change goes from gaseous chlorine and anhydrous ammonia to liquid bleach and liquid ammonia. “Those are both still very good disinfectants, so going to continue our excellent water quality, but they are much safer for the environment and much safer for our employees to work around and for the neighboring communities,”  said Rogers.

Rogers says Kentucky American invests some $25 million each year to support an infrastructure improvement and replacement plan.  The utility executive says rates paid by customers go toward system operation and improvements.
