National attention given to the reduction of recycling in some communities across the United States is prompting a local review in Lexington. A recycling forum is being held this evening at Henry Clay High School.
Panelists scheduled for tonight’s forum include representatives from the city’s waste division, the University of Kentucky and Fayette County public schools, and a private recycling entity. While Lexington’s city recycling efforts are affected by market demands, Bluegrass Greensource Director Amy Sohner doesn’t believe the elimination of recycling seen in some cities is something that would occur here. “And the reason that some of that has happened in other communities is because they greatly expanded what they could recycle. In Lexington, we haven’t really expanded what we can recycle in a long time, so we don’t have to pull back as much as some other communities,” said Sohner.
Bluegrass Greensource is a non profit that provides education and resources about how people can affect the environment. The recycling program at Henry Clay High School begins at 6:00.
