Smokey Conditions in Eastern Ky Prompt Health Alert

kentucky.com

A public health alert has been issued for a number of counties in Southeastern Kentucky.  It comes following ongoing wildland fires in the region.

The smoke inhalation advisory affects residents living in some nine counties.  Air quality tests this week indicated hazardous readings with significant health risks for the general public in some areas of Breathitt, Laurel, and Whitley counties.

People with respiratory conditions are urged to shelter in place in Bell, Harlan, and Rockcastle counties.  A health official in Jackson reported clearer skies following light shower activity this week.

State Division of Forestry Spokesman Mark Weidewitsch says fire crews now numbering 400 are working about two dozen wildland fires.  He says two woodland fires in Breathitt County have covered 3500 and 2200 acres respectively.  Weidewitsch says any overnight frost activity only serves to draw moisture out of brush.?
