Citizens in the northern Kentucky city of Falmouth are breathing a sigh of relief following a train derailment involving cars that carried hazardous materials.
A CSX train headed from Cincinnati to Atlanta came off the track Wednesday at mid-morning in the Pendleton County city of 2500.
24 cars derailed, including four containing sulfuric acid. There were no injuries and CSX Spokeswoman Melanie Cost says there were no hazardous materials released.
Cost says the focus now is on cleanup and determining the cause of the derailment, “We look at the train handling, so that includes the braking and the speed of the train at the time of the derailment. We look at the condition of the locomotives and cars and we look at the condition of the track in that area."
The CSX spokesperson says it’s difficult to pinpoint how long the cleanup will take. She says the railroad understands the derailment is impacting the city of Falmouth, but safety remains the first priority.?
