Database Tracks Large CO2 Emitters

Wondering how much carbon dioxide is being emitted in your country, state, county or Congressional district? I  just came across a cool database produced by CARMA (Carbon Monitoring for Action) that has all of that information.

If you look at Jefferson County's information, there are five power plants. Three of those have so-called "red alerts," which the website uses to mark the biggest emitters of carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, Mill Creek leads the pack, with emissions of nearly 11 million tons of CO2 in 2009.

I haven't done the analysis, but Politico is reporting (in their daily energy email) that Republican Congressional districts are generally higher in CO2 emissions.

Ranked by congressional district, 30 of the top 40 CO2-emitting districts in 2009 are held by GOP members, according to the Center for Global Development's newly-updated online Carbon Monitoring for Action database. And, interestingly enough, 22 of the top 40 CO2-emitting districts are represented by members that hold positions on the House committees with environmental and climate change jurisdiction: Energy and Commerce, Science, Natural Resources and Transportation and Infrastructure.

CARMA is a project of the Center for Global Development, which bills itself as a non-profit non-partisan think tank.
