Live: 2020 Election Updates And Results

Joseph R. Biden Jr. has been elected the 46th president of the United States and Kamala D. Harris has been elected the 49th vice president of the United States, according to the Associated Press, surpassing the 270 electoral votes needed with an AP call for the Democrats to win Pennsylvania with 20 electoral votes.

That puts the electoral vote total, per the AP, at 284 for President-elect Biden and 214 for President Trump. Alaska, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina remain to be called by the AP.

The Trump campaign is still contesting the process in several states, including Pennsylvania. The president and his team have made a number of false accusations to support the president’s baseless claim that the election is being stolen from him as legitimate ballots continue to be counted. In Pennsylvania and other places, mail-in ballots that are taking longer to count have broken heavily toward Biden and eaten into significant leads by the president in votes cast on Election Day. States will certify results in the coming weeks.

The Democratic victory comes in a close and contentious election, and is historic on multiple levels, securing Democrats’ four year quest to end the unprecedented and polarizing presidency of Donald Trump while achieving the first victory for a woman to national office. Harris is the first woman of color to ever run on a national ticket, and will be the first Black and first Asian American vice president. Biden is the oldest American ever elected president, at the age of 77.

The Biden-Harris ticket has received more votes than any other candidate in U.S. history, with a popular vote total close to 75 million.
