Eastern Kentucky University is expanding its services to veterans in central and eastern Kentucky. The school was recently awarded more than $1.4 million to fund a Veterans Upward Bound Program.

VUB works to help low income and first-generation veterans enroll in and graduate post-secondary education programs.

Barbara Kent is Director of EKU’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs. Kent said the program offers a variety of services.

“It includes academic readiness preparation, tutoring, advising and testing, core curriculum instruction, scholarship workshops, financial literacy, counseling services,” said Kent.

Kent said the program will work with community partners to meet all the needs of these veterans.

“Being able to make referrals for services to provide basic needs such as housing, food, child care services, etc. Trying to take that holistic view to addressing any issues that might be a barrier to post-secondary education,” said Kent.

The VUB funding from the federal government covers the salary of a program director and technology like laptops and hotspots. Kent said they hope to have a program director in the next couple of months.

Veterans who are interested in the program now can contact the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs at EKU.
