The Kentucky Department of Education's Science Advisory Panel and Review Committee has made final recommendations to Kentucky Academic Standards for Science for K-12 schools.
According to KDE officials the biggest change is not the standards themselves, but rather the layout of the document to make it more understandable.
Thomas Clouse is Academic Program Manager with the Office of Teaching and Learning at the Kentucky Department of Education. He said the goal of the recommendation wasn’t just to benefit teachers.
“But also hoping that those kind of that kind of front matter of the document and explanation goes a long way to help parents and other education stakeholders understand what the goal is for students in Kentucky, as they're having that journey K through 12 in the sciences,” said Clouse.
Clouse said the 39 educators who reviewed the standards should be applauded.
“I just really thank them for their time. And, and intentionality in this work. And just really thank our administrations across the state who have allowed their teachers to be released to work on these, especially in a year that has been so, so tough on a lot of our districts,” said Clouse.
In October, the recommendations will go to the Joint Committee on Education, which will review them and make sure the correct processes were followed. They will then go to the Kentucky Board of Education in December for review.
