Higher education could be getting a boost in Kentucky. Earlier this month, Governor Andy Beshear announced his plans for a twelve percent increase in education funding. Although lawmakers must come up with their own budget the Governor’s plan has university administrators smiling. Dr. David McFaddin is the president of Eastern Kentucky University. He said this is best it has looked for education in a long time.

“So excited to see that there seems to be a desire both from the executive branch and the legislative branch, specifically the House, to invest in education, specifically in higher education,” McFaddin said.

Mcfaddin is confident that education is a priority in this budget. The governor also unveiled plans for the funding of an additional two-billion dollars for pre-K to 12th grade education. McFaddin said he likes what he is seeing so far from lawmakers.

“Our state seems to be seeing increases in revenues. Those revenues are going to be invested in certain things in our state to hopefully grow and sustain our state. We are happy to see higher education seems to be at the top of the list of one of those things to help make Kentucky be the best version of itself,” he explains.

McFaddin said there is still a long way to go in the process.
