The Kentucky Community and Technical College System is earmarking $2.7 million to help reduce workforce gaps. The 3-year investment will center heavily on apprenticeships and other workforce training.
KCTCS Chancellor Kris Williams said the money will go to establish apprenticeship coordinators at each of the 16 colleges. “We’ll be partnering with businesses to work with their employees to have more registered apprenticeships. Often a registered apprenticeship means that the individual is retained longer in the position, so it’s to the employer’s benefit as well as the employee student’s benefit,” said Williams
Williams noted the community and technical college system takes a talent pipeline approach to help employers find the right employees. She expects the focus to remain heavily in areas of health care and advanced manufacturing. “If you look at the workforce data available through KY stats, the Kentucky Center for Statistics. Clearly there are both new jobs coming in but also people who are retiring and leaving the workforce. So, there is always some churn,” Williams said.
KCTCS has more than 400 advanced manufacturing partners statewide and 135 business partners who offer work and learn experiences.?
