After close to a half century at its current Main Street location, Fayette County School administrators are planning a move to a new location. The school board has approved a plan to leave the historic central office building and move into an existing 187,000 square foot office building on Lexmark property near Russell Cave Road.
Fayette Schools Chief Operating Officer Myron Thompson says the plan calls for using the current central office for an educational purpose. “Building a school is kind of a challenging opportunity here in Lexington, given some of the restrictions that we have. So, being able to free this particular building up for future use as an educational program, is just a wonderful opportunity for us.”
The price tag for the Lexmark facility along with utility costs comes to $13.5 million. School officials say that compares with an estimated $27 million cost to renovate the current central office building. The purchase will not be final until after the school district completes several due diligence steps and gets final approval from the Kentucky Department of Education.
