Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis says the state labor cabinet issued subpoenas tied to public school teachers’ sickout protests in Frankfort is an issue out of his control.
Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear said Tuesday he’ll take Gov. Matt Bevin to court if he doesn’t rescind the subpoenas.
Lewis believes sickout events which closed schools could be labeled as de-facto strikes. “I firmly believe that there are ways for us to work together and have conversations and ensure that teachers can make their voices heard, while we keep kids in school,” he said.
Bevin has indicated he will call lawmakers back to Frankfort for a special session on pension legislation. Although not related to teacher pensions, educators could still come to the capital.
