EKU Phase Two Science Building Earns LEED Gold Recognition

weku.fm

Eastern Kentucky University’s Phase Two Science Building is now formally recognized as a LEED Gold facility.  The ceremony took place Monday.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.  EKU Finance and Administration Business Officer Steve Caudill says there are a number of features in the building which led to the gold status. “The air quality sensors, which allows for air changeover only when necessary instead of constantly doing that.  There’s onset renewable energy.  That’s a big deal.  There’s kind of a medium sized solar array that produces energy for the building and offsets some of its energy usage,” said Caudill.

Caudill says the hillside is covered in native grasses which uses less water and prevents runoff.  He says two experimental green roofs sit atop the Phase 2 Science Building.

Caudill says such a designation is significant for this type of structure.  “It’s a really big deal for us, especially with the science building because of the energy demands that fall on a science building,” noted Caudill.

Caudill says this recognition demonstrates EKU’s intent to stick to the sustainability plan developed in 2015.

Four years ago, South Hall at EKU became the first LEED Gold-certified residence hall on a state university campus in Kentucky.
