The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education is set to adopt higher minimum admission standards for state universities. The change increases the minimum from a 2.0 grade point average to a 2.5.
Council President Bob King says the move sends a message to high school students to take their studies seriously.“Those students who enter the universities with at least a 2.5 grade point average in their high schools across the state tend to be more successful than students who may have scored well on an ACT, but had a lower grade point average,” said King.
Students with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 could still be admitted. But Kings says they must sign a learning contract that lays out expectations for both the student and the school. The contract would also specify support services such as mentoring and tutoring. “If a university is going to decide to admit a student in that marginal area, between 2.0 and 2.5, they understand that by making that admission decision, they’re taking on a corresponding responsibility to make that student successful,” added King.
The change will also undergo legislative review. If given final approval, it would take effect for the 2019-2020 academic year.
