EKU Tests On-Campus Siren System

Sirens are expected to wail in and around the Eastern Kentucky University campus this weekend.  It’s the first independent test on the Richmond campus.

The sounding of EKU’s four sirens situated around campus will follow the regularly scheduled Madison County Emergency Management test.  Eastern Emergency management Director Gary Folckemer says both tone and verbal messages will sound a little bit after noon Saturday.  “It’s really just a capabilities test to make sure in works as intended, the way it truly should work in a time of crisis, so that’s why we picked this coming Saturday, probably the quietest time of the year for the university,” said Folckemer.

Folckemer says the testing is not related to activities at the Blue Grass Army Depot.  He says the RAVE emergency communication system used at EKU is more targeted through text, voice, and emails.  Folckemer says that system would likely be more appropriate for campus threats.?
