EKU Board Grants Contract Extension for Benson

Eastern Kentucky University’s Board of Regents is extending President Michael Benson’s contract by two years.  The school’s governing board approved the extension Wednesday.

Benson became Eastern’s 13th president in August of 2013.  The contract extension seeks to ensure the Utah native remains at the helm of the Richmond-based school for four more years.  Benson says he appreciates the security of the position and that he has a great team around him,  “I have the support of the board and I certainly hope I’ve got the support of the community and they appreciate that we’re trying our best.”

Board Chair Craig Turner believes the action indicates a strong commitment by the regents,  “We know there’s a lot of rumors circulating around and I think this will put a lot of rumors to bed.”

A statement from Eastern Spokeswoman Kristi Middleton reads in part, “As far as the Chair’s comments on rumors, we know when you have a dynamic leader like President Benson as national presidential searches are announced there is often speculation about a potential candidate’s interest or likely recruitment for a position he would be suited for, and the Chair and President have heard those rumblings. President Benson remains committed to EKU and serving our students.”

The statement went on to say that the Board of Regents’ action on Benson’s contract represents confidence in the president’s leadership and vision for the University’s future.?
