EKU Officials Investigate Adding Security Cameras on Campus

washingtonpost.com

Eastern Kentucky University officials are exploring ways to enhance security following a second security threat this year.   The investigation continues into a threatening graffiti message found in a campus restroom.  Public Safety Director Brian Makinen  says a third party vendor will be asked to make suggestions.  “It’s very likely that it’s going to lead to the addition of security cameras or other security measures,” said Makinen.

Makinen says there are already cameras in public areas on campus and in residence halls.  He says the outdoor emergency phone system has just been overhauled and the school is about to launch a new mobile safety app for cell phones.  “A mobile safety app, or essentially a blue phone in your pocket that has GIS capability for emergency purposes and use,” added Makinen.

Makinen says several interviews have been conducted related to the most recent incident.  He says the ten thousand dollar reward for tips regarding the case remains in effect.  The public safety director also reminds all students and staff, who haven’t done so, to enroll cell phones in the emergency notification system.
