The executive director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence is stepping down next year to address health issues.

The Lexington Herald-Leader said Stu Silberman announced Tuesday he will retire next fall. Silberman said he was recently diagnosed with a rare kidney disease and will eventually need a transplant.

Silberman is the former superintendent of schools in Daviess and Fayette counties. He became director of the Prichard Committee four years ago after longtime leader Robert Sexton died.

Silberman said the Prichard Committee's board has begun a selection process for a new leader.
