Transy Officials: Test Scores Optional Under Future Admissions Policy

transy.edu

Transylvania University is moving toward a test-optional admissions policy.

Beginning with the fall 2016 admission cycle, students will no longer be required to submit ACT or SAT scores. Students will have the option to include their scores but they can choose to omit them if they feel the scores do not reflect their academic abilities.

Transy Vice President Brad Goan says the goal of the new policy is not to boost enrollment.  "That's not the motivation for what we're doing here, and I mean what we're trying to do is again, make sure we're providing opportunities for students and we're selecting the best fit students for Transylvania," said Goan.

Goan says more than 40 of the top 100 liberal arts schools in the country already use this approach.  "We hear very clearly from schools that they do not find a performance gap between testers and non-testers, that they perform equally well in the classroom and most importantly they retain and graduate at equivalent rates," added Goan.

Goan says students opting not to submit ACT or SAT scores will be asked for additional writing samples, and encouraged to meet with an admissions counselor.  Goan says Transy is the first selective admission college in Kentucky to go this route. ?
