Eastern Kentucky University officials are beginning to implement the results of a months-long restructuring process.
Earlier this week the university announced that about 20 positions had been redefined and that existing staff were asked to reapply for new jobs. Five EKU employees were not rehired.
Three departments were involved in the reorganization: Student Success, led by vice president Laurie Carter; Development and Alumni Relations, led by vice president Nick Perlick; and Communications and Marketing, led by vice president Scott Cason.
Cason says he and his colleagues made the decision to reorganize their respective divisions at the same time.
“We thought if we all reorganized together, that across campus there would be, possibly there would be openings, job openings," said Cason. "And folks in my division or in student success or in development and alumni relations would have the opportunity to look outside their division for a job, if they wanted to change their career path.”
For the five people not re-hired, Cason says they are free to apply for any other opportunities on campus. He says if they do not find a placement or choose to move on from EKU, they will be offered severance packages based on the number of years of service.
By way of full disclosure, WEKU reports to the Communications and Marketing Department and vice president Scott Cason.
