This week, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Cross Blue Shield awarded scholarships to eight students in the nurse practitioner program at Eastern Kentucky University. The students will provide medical care to eastern Kentucky communities once they graduate.

Leon Lamoreaux is the president of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicaid. He said recipients are required to serve eastern Kentucky communities for at least three years.

“So what we are trying to do is go upstream to invest in the future health care providers so that we are able to make a difference in what would otherwise be underserved communities,” Lamoreaux said.

Lamoreaux said the students will be able to provide care for about 4,500 people once they graduate.

The $92,000 donation will pay for the recipients’ textbooks and tuition. Anthem recently made a similar donation to Hazard Community and Technical College.

All of the scholarship recipients are from eastern Kentucky.
