Shooting Inside Fayette Mall Leaves One Dead, Two Injured, And Shoppers Fleeing

A shooting  inside Lexington’s most well-known shopping mall Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of one person, injuries to two others and provoked panic and fear in numerous shoppers in the retail complex.

The Lexington Police Department reports officers were called to Fayette Mall around four o clock.  Three people were shot near the Bath and Body Works store.  Based on a preliminary investigation, the case doesn’t appear to be a random shooting.  Police say it’s possible the suspect and deceased victim knew each other.   The Fayette County coroner says 17 year old Kenneth Wayne Bottoms Junior of Lexington died at the University of Kentucky Hospital.

Following the shooting, the mall was placed on lockdown and mall patrons and employees were evacuated.  Many officers, including off-duty personnel responded to the scene. UK Hospital was closed for visitors.  UK Spokesman Jay Blanton said the measure was for crowd control and safety precautions.  Late last night the hospital was re-opened.

Fayette Mall said on twitter it planned to re-open Monday.  Police continue to actively investigate the shooting and ask anyone with information about this case to contact the agency.
