Car Break-Ins In Lexington Running Ahead Of Last Year

Vehicle break-ins in Lexington are on the rise.  In 2019, Lexington police are reporting 1,900 thefts from vehicles.  That’s on pace to surpass last year’s total.

Police Public Information Officer Brenna Angel said in November alone 55 guns were reported stolen from vehicles.

“A lot of times those guns are never recovered. If we do recover a gun that was stolen from a vehicle, we’re usually seeing it connected to another crime, such as a violent crime or something dealing with narcotics,” said Angel.

Angel said cases of car windows being smashed are increasing. One man is reportedly responsible for hundreds of thefts from vehicles in recent months.? Police have arrested two 15 year olds and a 16 year old on theft related charges. Angel encourage motorists not to leave anything of value in a vehicle, visible or not.

The Lexington police spokeswoman said a national crime prevention campaign called the “Nine P.M. Routine” calls upon car owners to double check their cars before bedtime.
