Law enforcement commanders from agencies across the country have participated in a Lexington conference focusing on changing the culture of the public safety profession.
The two day event, sponsored by the University of Kentucky Police Department, was called “Transform Law Enforcement.” UK Police Chief Joe Monroe says the problems facing law enforcement include the perception of the public, the way officers present themselves, and the way police behave.
“One of the things we’re doing with transform is to actually start changing the culture and making sure we implement some changes one step at a time around the country,” said Monroe
Officers from as far away as Spokane Washington and Miami Florida took part in the Transform Law Enforcement conference.?
Monroe says an afternoon session on critical incident stress addressed what’s called critical amnesia. “Give your officers time before you start doing the interview in the post shooting investigation, so they have time to actually think about what happened, because it’s going to be totally different if you interview them right after the shooting versus two days after,” explained Monroe.
A morning session dealt with health issues affecting police, particularly insulin resistance. That’s a condition where cells fail to respond normally to insulin.
