Lexington has a new curfew law in effect. The new curfew ordinance sets midnight every night as the time for those under 18 to be inside. The previous law established 1:00 a.m. as the deadline on weekends.
Teenagers experienced the biggest change for the first time this past weekend.
It was a warm spring Saturday night when seven teenagers gathered at a Lexington Sonic Drive-In.
Several of the teens, including 18-year-old Luke Florence, 17-year-old Lindsey Campbell, and 16-year-old Annie Vandenburg, voiced their opinions about the curfew.
“I think the curfew is a good thing, just so we make sure all the kids are in safe, especially with all the bad things that are happening out and around the world right now,” said Florence.
“I’m not really sure that putting a curfew will change people that are breaking rules. I really don’t think it will have too much of an affect on people who are doing bad things after midnight,” Campbell said.
“I think the curfew is a good idea theoretically, just because kids are staying out way too late. But, I don’t really think they are going to follow that,” noted Vandenburg
When asked how many of the seven Dunbar High school teenagers had been out as late as 3:00 a.m., three to four hands went up. The previous curfew set 11:00 p.m. as the time to be in Sundays through Thursdays.
