Downtown Richmond Gunshots Prompt EKU Emergency Alerts

Stu Johnson

Richmond police continue their investigation into an overnight downtown disturbance which resulted in alerts to Eastern Kentucky University students and staff.  Authorities believe ‘fired shots’ came after an altercation at a downtown bar.

Police Major Steve Gregg says officers were first called about dispersing a large crowd outside a Richmond bar.  He says there were reports of two groups of men involved in a fight.  Gregg says gunshots were heard in the second street area and four people stopped a few blocks away.  “We believe that these subjects are the ones that were firing the weapon in the downtown area.  We haven’t proved that at this time. We’re still under investigation,” said Gregg.

Gregg says three men were arrested, two on outstanding warrants for previous charges and the third for alcohol intoxication, fleeing, and evading.  He says no injuries were reported.?
