Security guard vacancies at the Fayette County Jail could hover near single digits by the end of the year. City council members got an update last week.
The Fayette County Detention Center, like many jails across the nation, is struggling to keep corrections officers. Administrators say only certain people are cut out for security positions.
Community Corrections Director Steve Haney says another staff member has worked to speed up the hiring process. “Major Carter, he’s our new HR guy, he’s gone to interviewing and testing all at one meeting. We’ve done them on weekends, whenever we can to accommodate those people who are interested in working,” said Haney
There have also been three guard classes over the last nine months. Haney says the hiring process previously took about three months to carry out and applicants would often find other work during that period.
