Fund Launched To Bring A Coronavirus Memorial To The State Capitol Grounds

Stu Johnson

The state capitol grounds in Frankfort could one day be the site of a memorial honoring more than five-thousand Kentuckians lost to coronavirus.

During Monday’s briefing, Governor Beshear announced the launching of the Team Kentucky COVID-19 Memorial Fund. “Soon we’ll announce an artist call to encourage artists to submit their ideas for something that can truly encapsulate the grief, the hope, the togetherness, the difficulty.  All those things that we have felt this last year,” said Beshear.

Governor Beshear announced licensed childcare centers are returning to traditional classroom group sizes.  Social distancing requirements will continue to be observed and facility visits will be limited.  The governor also reported 396 new cases of coronavirus Monday and 23 deaths.

Governor Beshear said his administration is intent on getting the coronavirus vaccine into the arms of Kentuckians at a higher rate than Federal expectations.  The governor reported more than 142,000 Kentuckians had received a COVID-19 vaccine over the last week.  Beshear noted the aim is to best the timeline handed down by the Biden administration.   “Our commitment is to beat the May first date when President Biden wants anybody in America over 16 to get a vaccine.  In other words for all the priority groups to be open and everybody who qualifies to get that vaccine.  We think on Thursday the schedule we’re going to lay out will beat that,” explained Beshear.

The President aims to sign up all adults for vaccines by the first of May and actually receive vaccinations by the end of May.  Also this Thursday, Governor Beshear said a report on coronavirus outbreaks at two state prisons will be discussed along with steps planned to address that issue.
