Kentucky's Long Term Care Ombudsman Talks About COVID Challenges

chfs.ky.gov

One of the challenges during the coronavirus pandemic has been trying to limit coronavirus activity within long term care settings.  Transferring residents out of nursing homes is not a viable option.

Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Sherry Culp says people who undergo a surgical procedure, like a hip replacement, may have a relatively short stay in a long term care center.  But, she said about 60% of residents have no other place to go.  Culp noted slowing spread of coronavirus through on-site staff housing is not feasible.  Culp added nursing homes don’t typically have extra space. “I can’t think of one facility right now that would probably have space to be able to house employees, if they were willing to stay, and not leave,” said Culp.

Culp admits that would likely bring a whole new level of stress.  The state long term care ombudsman says she has heard of case where, during wintry weather, some staff members were put up in nearby motels.
She said current challenges related to coronavirus in the state’s nursing homes could prompt a further look at design of these facilities.  Kentucky has lost a significant number of long term care residents to COVID-19.  Culp noted the typical layout of a nursing home creates logistical problems, adding significant health issues are typically seen annually during the flu season.  The advocate for residents in long term care facilities hopes the Kentucky legislature will take up nursing home staffing legislation in 2021.
