Kentucky Official Says Tariffs Only One Factor In Importing

wtcky.org

The chief trade officer for World Trade Center Kentucky says higher tariffs on Chinese imports are impacting business in the Commonwealth.  But, Darren Srebnick says the dent in import activity is not anticipated to be a major dip.

The World Trade Center official says there are, quote, “always opportunities in chaos.” “Within this there’s a lot of different programs to allow for tax reduction, duty reduction on your imports and exports and quite frankly this is the time to investigate and become as lean as possible, so that hopefully when this tension ends, the company is even stronger.”

Srebnick says some larger Kentucky firms are maintaining their ties to China, partly because of the required volume of imports needed to run their businesses.  He says others may be shifting to other countries like Thailand or Vietnam.  World Trade Center Kentucky will conduct an importing program Wednesday morning in Louisville.
