Starting in 2019, Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport will begin offering non-stop service to the nation’s capital. This flight will replace another flight to New Jersey.
Beginning in mid-February, United Airlines plans to offer two daily direct flights to Washington. Blue Grass Airport Director Eric Frankl says it will replace the current non-stop flight to Newark New Jersey. He says the Newark airport is a capacity constrained airport where weather issues are more apt to prompt delays. “Dulles is not capacity constrained that way, so we feel like it’s going to be a better option for people going again to the Washington D.C. area, the northeast, or overseas,” said Frankl.
Frankl says passenger numbers are critical when considering non-stop offerings. “Do you have enough interest, given the population size, to support a daily service, whether it’s to Chicago, or Denver, or Dallas, or wherever? You have to have enough folks that really can support that every single day of the year,” noted Frankl.
While airfare is a major factor in travelers making transportation plans, Frankl says availability of direct access to other airports is also important. Blue Grass currently features 18 non-stop flights.
