Toyota’s announcement of a one and a third billion dollar investment at its Scott County plant is expected to have implications for decades. Changes at the plant are expected to bring about an overhaul of designing, engineering, and production.
The Georgetown Toyota plant is already the Japanese automaker’s largest factory in the world. Governor Bevin says the investment in the Scott County plant ranks higher than the initial financial commitment, “It’s extraordinary of 1.3 billion dollars to transform and provide that rebirth to this plant.”
The governor told employees gathered for the announcement his interest in Toyota began in the 1980’s when he visited plants in Japan.
Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President Dave Adkisson says the investment does more than offer employee security, “Not only does it shore up the jobs that we have at Toyota in Kentucky, but I think it means very good things about future prospects for getting additional vehicles made in Georgetown.”
The central Kentucky plant employs 8200 workers and that’s not expected to change with the investment. Manuel Gonzales will work on the engine line, “Today is my first day with Toyota. I just got hired. For me it’s a very special day. All my family are happy for me.”
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky employees live in 80 counties across the Commonwealth.
