Hoping to help Kentuckians who’ve been unemployed for months, the state will spend over a million dollars in federal money on training programs. Terri Bradshaw with the State Office of Employment and Training says grants will support on-the-job training, customized training, and registered apprenticeships.
“We have chosen to focus on workers who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or longer and to provide services to those who will soon exhaust their unemployment insurance benefits. So, those will be our main focuses. This is due to the high number of long term unemployed individuals and the continuing negative impacts of widespread small layoffs across the state,” said Bradshaw.
Bradshaw says there are many people across the Commonwealth need vocational training.
“There will be places that have higher unemployment and that may be particularly because a large community supported business or industry and leaves a large number of people unemployed at one time,” added Bradshaw.
It was announced this week that May unemployment rates were up in 78 Kentucky counties and remained unchanged in ten counties compared to a year ago.
